Recommended equipment specifications from Direct Communications
If you have multiple desktop computers that you would like to have directly cabled with Ethernet, here is an inexpensive 5 Port Gigabit switch for multiple Ethernet connections. Townhomes were wired with Cat5 wire from the data panel to phone jacks. Phone jacks can be re purposed for Ethernet use by changing the ends.
Example Router:
- Must have a Gigabit (1000 Mbps) Ethernet port to connect fiber to Ethernet adapter.
- Dual Band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios in the router. Most new wireless tablets and laptops have a 5 GHz card. Would be listed as 802.11 AC or 802.11 N.
- If the router can operate in 802.11 G/N mode and not 802.11B then the performance will be better.
- We recommend using the 5 GHz wireless network cards instead of 2.4 GHz. There are over 20 channels in 5 GHz compared to 3 channels in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
- Look for the word Gigabit on the box. If you're still not sure feel free to contact Direct Communications tech support. They will be happy to look up the specs of the router you are considering and verify if it will work.
